Recognition of professional qualifications

In Germany, there are regulated and non-regulated professions. For non-regulated professions, a recognition of professional qualifications is not necessary. For regulated professions, foreign qualifications must first be recognized in order to practice the profession.

How to have your professional qualifications recognized
Having your professional qualifications recognized is possible for educational, academic and professional certifications. The process involves several steps:

  1. Before submitting your application, it is recommended to first get advice in a personal consultation to clarify any questions related to the appropriate certifying authority, comparable occupations (reference occupation), duration of the application, the costs or any possible alternatives, etc.
  2. You must first apply to have your foreign qualifications examined for equivalency.
  3. Depending on your profession, you must submit your application to the respective competent certifying authority.
  4. The recognition process is individual. Depending on the profession there are different offices responsible for verifying the equivalency of your qualifications.

The accreditation procedure usually takes no longer than three months upon receipt of the complete application and supporting documentation. The minimum application fee is EUR 100. The maximum fee is EUR 600. Other services are charged separately. The fees for the procedure are determined on a case-by-case basis. In some cases the employment agency or Jobcenter may assume the costs. You can find out from your local contact which certifying authority is applicable in your case.
